What’s the Best Way to Use of the Status Bar?

Simply highlight a range of numbers in Excel. The status bar provides useful information on what you’ve selected, including the average, sum, and count of your chosen number range. Even if you knew about the status bar information, you might be surprised to learn that even more options open up when you right-click on the range. For instance, you can find the maximum or minimum values.

How Can You Use Shortcuts for Quick Navigation?

“Many users find that using an external keyboard with keyboard shortcuts for Excel helps them work more efficiently. For users with mobility or vision disabilities, keyboard shortcuts can be easier than using the touchscreen and are an essential alternative to using a mouse,” according to Microsoft.

This is one of the most useful of all Microsoft Excel editing tips.

Use the following keyboard shortcuts to quickly perform numerous editing activities:

  • Ctrl+home – navigate to the beginning of the row
  • Ctrl+End – goes to the further right cell in the row with data
  • Ctrl+right arrow – go to the furthest right cell of the worksheet.
  • Ctrl+left arrow – go to the furthest left cell of the worksheet.
  • Ctrl+down arrow – go to the bottom of the worksheet.
  • Ctrl+up arrow – go to the top of the worksheet.

Can You Adjust the Header to Always Show Certain Information?

You can do this by using sticky rows. To keep some rows on the top of the sheet when you scroll, select the row and click View at the top. Click on Freeze Panes to select one of the options below:

  • Freeze Panes – Sticky all, based on the current view.
  • Freeze Top Row – Freeze the top row.
  • Freeze First Column – Freeze the first column.

What Can Quick Select Formulas Do to Further Business Transformation?

When you type in a formula, use the up or down arrow to scroll through the suggested formulas. Tab to select a formula. This saves you from typing the same formula multiple times.

Did You Know You Can Auto Fill Information or Formulas?

“Excel has a feature that helps you automatically enter data. If you are entering a predictable series (e.g. 1, 2, 3…; days of the week; hours of the day) you can use the AutoFill command to automatically extend the sequence. You can also use this for formulas – set up the formula once, then use the AutoFill to propagate it to the other cells,” according to the University of Michigan.

When you want to fill in a range of data, highlight it and drag downward. More cells autofill for easy data population. For example, use it to enter consecutive dates (1/1, 1/2, 1/3, etc.).

Excel often adjusts the data you can auto fill. For example, for a column enumerating every third day, the auto-fill feature fills in the missing numbers.

How Can You Copy the Same Data Across Many Cells?

Copy one cell’s data into many other cells. First, press Ctrl+C to copy the current cell. Then, highlight the cells you wish to populate and press Ctrl+V.
